Here's the facts regarding the two ingredients-sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate-that have caused such a scare. Contrary to the rumor, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are not the same ingredient. SLS is a medium to strong surfactant (a surfactant is a "surface active agent" or detergent) that, when used alone or in high concentrations, can be irritating to some skin.
