Vitamin A and Hair Loss If hair loss is due to thyroid dysfunction, eat more foods rich in vitamin A and iodine or take the appropriate Vitamin A and iodine supplements. But be cautious because, excessive intake of Vitamin A can cause hair loss. Taking large doses of vitamin A (100,000 IU or more daily) for a long period of time, on the other hand, can trigger hair loss, but stopping the vitamin A will reverse the problem. As in case of vitamin A deficiencies, often hair will grow back when the deficiency is corrected.
A deficiency of Vitamin A will cause dry hair and rough skin. Vitamin A is stored in the liver and if large doses (50,000 - 100,000 iu daily) are taken for a prolonged period the liver cannot store the A vitamin, and it can build up in the body to give unpleasant side effects which include nausea, headaches, hair loss, drowsiness and weight loss.
The R.D.A. for vitamin A is 2,500 iu.
